Villages and small towns in the region of the nature park, within day trips, show their origin in Moorish times. Nijar, located in the mountains, is the city of pottery and rag rugs.

The Alpujarras, the foothills of the Sierra Nevada with springs and rivers and vineyards, invite you to go on day trips. The hot springs of Los Baños de la Alhamilla have been a popular place to visit since ancient times.

In Almería, the market hall offers exuberant pleasure for all the senses. A tour of the arcaded courtyard of the art academy, a former monastery, and a tapa stop at the Museo de Aceite de Oliva are almost a must.

The climb to the Alcazaba, high above the city, leads into Almeria’s Moorish history. The Arabic name means Espejo del Mar / mirror of the sea in Spanish.

The other big cities are Granada at the foot of the Sierra Nevada (reachable by car or train in about 2.5 hours),
Malaga in the west and Cartagena in the northeast on the coast (each can be reached in about 4 hours by bus or car).
